How Costly Blunders Have Kept Kalonzo Musyoka In The Political Cold

The political blunders Mr Musyoka is known to have made in his long political career are many. For instance, ahead of the 2013 elections he was approached by Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto who wanted him to join them in the TNA party and become their presidential candidate as they sorted out their case at The Hague. He reportedly told them later that as a senior lawyer, he had investigated the ICC charge sheet and concluded that the evidence against them was overwhelming, in other words, he did not want to associate himself with suspected murderers and rapists

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka is in the news again after attending an event at State House held by President Ruto in honour of the visiting heads of state and government attending the Climate Change Conference in Nairobi last week. It remains unknown for now whether the Azimio top leadership had approved his attendance or whether he was there in his own capacity. Several theories have emerged claiming that he represented his colleagues in Azimio, while others say he had received an invite from President William Ruto.

Political analysts, however, opine that Kalonzo Musyoka is known for making political blunders since 2013 and the fear now is that this is yet another of his many political mistakes. The political blunders Mr. Musyoka is known to have made during his long political career are many. For instance, ahead of the 2013 elections he was handed a very good chance to become president after being approached by Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto who wanted him to join them in the TNA party and become their presidential candidate as they sorted out their case at The Hague.

Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto drove to Kalonzo’s Karen residence for a meeting one evening hoping to persuade him to join their party. According to sources privy to the discussions, the plan was for Kalonzo to join the TNA party, and run for the presidency once in office, It was hoped that he would serve for ten years with the hope that by then, The Hague matter would have been resolved. Kalonzo is to have asked for time to consult.

He reportedly told them later that as a senior lawyer, he had investigated the ICC charge sheet and concluded that the evidence against them was overwhelming, in other words, he did not want to associate with suspects of murder, rape and the destruction of property.

He then started his presidential campaign only to abandon the idea midway to join Raila Odinga as his running mate, they lost. Another opportunity came in 2017 when both Uhuru and Ruto urged him to abandon Raila Odinga again and work with them in Jubilee as Party Speaker of the National Assembly, but he declined.

After failing to bring Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi, and Moses Wetangula on board, Uhuru Kenyatta, without involving Ruto, cut a deal with Raila Odinga. Had Kalonzo agreed to Uhuru’s request, he would have been the one to do the handshake and not Raila Odinga in 2018, he missed the opportunity.

Ahead of the 2022 elections, President Ruto again tried to woo Kalonzo Musyoka to join Kenya Kwanza, Kalonzo turned him down with his offer of 30% of the government on the table; instead, he stuck with Raila Odinga as Prime Minister-designate had Odinga won the presidency. Here again, Kalonzo made a serious political blunder because they lost.

Immediately after the 2022 elections, President Ruto again reached out to Kalonzo with a promise of a 20% stake in the government and was offered the position of either Prime Cabinet Secretary or Speaker of the National Assembly, which he again blatantly rejected, saying he was comfortable in Azimio. Analysts now argue that Kalonzo Musyoka has made a series of serious political mistakes and needs serious political advisers to guide him ahead of the 2027 elections.
