US authorities discreetly arrived in the country on Sunday night and swiftly removed wanted murder suspect Kevin Kang’ethe. Sources familiar with the covert operation disclosed that the Americans, acting on extradition orders from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), conducted the extraction under the cover of darkness. The operation, described as a “cut-and-paste” manoeuvre, closely mirrored the 2017 extraction of the Akasha brothers, Baktash and Ibrahim, who were secretly extradited on charges of smuggling large quantities of heroin to the US.
DPP Renson Ingonga confirmed Kevin Kang’ethe’s extradition to the US in a letter dated September 2nd, announcing the successful handover of the fugitive. “Great teamwork!! He is heading back to face justice! Thank you all,” read a caption accompanying a photo of Kang’ethe being escorted to a private jet by detectives from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), believed to have been taken on Sunday night. In the image, Kang’ethe, seen from behind, is wearing a navy-blue jumper and blue headsets as he ascends the stairs, accompanied by FBI detectives and officers from the DPP’s office.
According to the DPP, Kevin Kang’ethe departed Nairobi on September 1, 2024, and is scheduled to face murder charges on Tuesday, September 3, 2024) at Suffolk Superior Court in Pemberton Square. The letter states, “Kang’ethe fled to Kenya in 2023 after allegedly killing his lover, Margaret Mbitu, and leaving her body in a vehicle parked at Logan Airport.” Washington, D.C., issued an extradition request to Nairobi following the suspect’s arrest. Kang’ethe was subsequently apprehended by Kenyan police and brought before the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi, where Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina approved the DPP’s extradition request.
In a dramatic turn of events, Kevin Kang’ethe escaped from police custody at Muthaiga Police Station in Nairobi this past February while awaiting extradition on a Massachusetts warrant accusing him of murdering his girlfriend and leaving her body in a car at a Boston airport. The 40-year-old, charged with killing his 30-year-old girlfriend and later abandoning her body in a vehicle, managed to flee the Muthaiga Police Station under unclear circumstances.
