Police in Thika, Kiambu County, are investigating the mysterious death of an 8-year-old student from Pebbles Academy. The student reportedly left home on August 29th on the school bus but tragically never made it back. The family later discovered that his body was in the mortuary.
Thika police commander, Lawrence Muchangi, stated that officers are awaiting a post-mortem report before proceeding with the investigation. The school administration has remained silent on the matter, raising concerns. A teacher at the school reportedly said that the student collapsed during a race and never regained consciousness. According to the family, their son had spoken to his mother, who was away on a business trip, asking her to inform the teacher that he did not want to participate in the cross-country race. Despite this, the teacher allegedly forced him to run.
“It’s heartbreaking that the school refuses to tell us what really happened. They took him to Avenue Hospital Thika when he was already gone. It’s unbearable,” said a family friend, Nduta wa Muniu. “When we went to the school to collect his belongings, we were told to wait at the gate. When we were finally allowed in, the director told us she couldn’t explain what happened to him because their lawyer advised against it.
“Mama had access to the office as a parent, but once her child was no more, she was only allowed to be attended to at the gate,” Nduta added, questioning the safety of children in such schools. When reached by phone, the mother said she was in Embu and not in a position to discuss the matter.
