Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is making significant efforts to avoid an impeachment motion against him following a recent closed-door meeting with MCAs from the Azimio coalition. The meeting, held on Monday, came amid growing speculation about an impending impeachment motion.
One MCA who attended the meeting but requested anonymity disclosed that Sakaja pleaded with them to abandon the impeachment plans and instead focus on supporting his administration. “Sakaja was visibly concerned about the impeachment rumors and asked us to set aside the plans and collaborate with him. He mentioned that the President is keen on seeing improvements in the city,” the MCA said.
Earlier, Sakaja had taken several MCAs to State House for a meeting with President William Ruto. The meeting was also attended by Makadara MP George Aladwa, who is the ODM Nairobi county chairperson.
The impeachment discussions began two weeks ago when Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai accused Sakaja of seeking political protection from former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Despite this, some Azimio MCAs critical of Sakaja claimed they were not invited to the meeting at his private office on Riverside Drive.
Over the weekend, Sakaja joined Raila Odinga at a cultural event on Raila’s Opoda farm in Bondo, Siaya County. Sakaja shared on X, “The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Museum is one of the finest collections of the history of the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s liberation, and East Africa.” He also paid respects to Raila’s late son Fidel Odinga by visiting his graveside. “I deeply appreciate the chance to visit my brother Fidel’s final resting place, nine years after we lost him,” Sakaja posted.
While Sakaja’s visit with Raila might appear routine, it has sparked discussion across political circles at City Hall. The Azimio coalition holds a majority in the County Assembly with 44 MCAs, compared to the Kenya Kwanza coalition’s 36.
