Police officers in Khwisero Sub-county have been called upon to investigate a widow accused of selling the same piece of land to multiple buyers. The woman, known for her strong “appetite” for money, lives near COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli’s ancestral home in Bukwala Village.
Complainants from Kisa West Location, Wambulishe Sub-location in Kakamega County, allege that the widow has been exploiting her son’s imprisonment to deceive potential land buyers. Her son is currently serving time at Shikusa Maximum Prison in Kakamega County, following a murder conviction from several years ago.
According to those affected, the woman uses her son’s legal situation to convince buyers that she is selling her land to fund an appeal in hopes of reducing his sentence to manslaughter. However, after finalizing the sale, she later claims that her family objects to the buyer developing the land and offers a refund that never materializes.
One victim shared that when he asked for a refund, the widow became rude and even issued threats. Several other individuals who have fallen victim to her alleged scam have pledged to report the matter to Khwisero Police Station, seeking either the recovery of their money or legal action that would compel her to refund them, potentially with interest.
When contacted for her side of the story, the woman admitted to selling her land, explaining that she needed the money to resolve another family issue involving her other son, who reportedly married a teenage girl under 18. She claimed some of the money was used to settle matters with security officers and assured that she intends to compensate her complainants when she is financially able.
It is reported that at least 10 individuals, including a teacher and an administrator, are preparing to file cases against the widow.
