Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir appeared before Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives at the Coast Regional Police Headquarters last week, where he recorded a statement regarding allegations linking him and top county officials to the sexual assault of a local blogger.
Speaking from his vehicle outside the police headquarters, Nassir condemned the attack, calling it “unjustifiable” and insisting that “justice must be served.” Despite being implicated in the case, the governor maintained that he had “nothing to hide” and expressed his willingness to cooperate with the investigation.
Nassir, accompanied by his lawyer and Mombasa Chief of Staff, Dr. Noah Akala, arrived quietly at the police headquarters. However, by early afternoon, news of his presence had circulated, attracting journalists to the scene. Some officers initially denied his presence, causing confusion among reporters. Upon leaving the premises in a white Toyota TX, Nassir explained that he had opted for a low-profile visit to avoid drawing attention to himself, stressing that the focus should remain on justice for the victim.
“I came in an unofficial vehicle because this isn’t about me. It’s about a young man who has suffered a terrible crime, and we all agree that justice must be served,” he said. “I’ve recorded my statement, and I urge anyone with information to assist the DCI in this investigation.”
Condemning the assault, Nassir said, “No rational person can condone such a heinous act. Now, the goal is ensuring justice prevails.” He also revealed that his mother, mentioned in the case, would fully cooperate with the investigation. “If a statement from her is needed, I’ll personally ensure she provides it,” Nassir assured.
Earlier in the week, Nassir publicly addressed the allegations for the first time, calling them politically motivated and reaffirming his readiness to clear his name. Meanwhile, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Lands and Urban Planning, Mohamed Hussein, who had been arrested with the same allegations, was released on anticipatory bail after his legal team successfully petitioned the Mombasa High Court.
