Former MP Victor Munyaka Rejects President Ruto’s Job Offer

Former Machakos Town MP Victor Munyaka’s decision to decline a job offer from President William Ruto has sparked curiosity. Sources in Ukambani indicate that Munyaka, a long-time ally of Ruto, is focused on securing his seat in the upcoming elections and believes that taking on another role would distract him from this goal.

President Ruto had appointed Munyaka as chairperson of the Kenya Animal Genetic Resource Centre. However, within 24 hours, Munyaka announced his decision to reject the position, citing the challenging political climate in Ukambani, particularly influenced by the rivalry between Ruto and Kalonzo Musyoka.

Observers note that Kalonzo and his Wiper party are actively challenging UDA members in the region, setting the stage for potential political setbacks in the 2027 elections. Former Wiper members now aligned with the UDA party may face significant risks as the election approaches.

Reports suggest that Munyaka has assessed the political environment in Ukambani and consulted with close allies of Kalonzo, who advised him to decline the appointment and focus on securing his position with Wiper in 2027. As the leader of the Azimio coalition, Kalonzo is viewed as a formidable presidential contender against Ruto, particularly with Ukambani voters historically supporting him and Wiper candidates.

As a result, sources indicate that Munyaka has chosen to distance himself from Ruto and align with Kalonzo Musyoka in preparation for a political comeback in 2027. He has previously expressed dissatisfaction with Ruto’s neglect of regional development and appointments, despite being Ruto’s primary representative in Ukambani.

In a statement acknowledging his appointment, Munyaka expressed gratitude but ultimately explained his choice: “After soul-searching and consultations, I have decided to respectfully decline this appointment due to the current political climate that threatens the government’s economic transformation agenda. I wish the administration success.”

He also urged Ruto to reconsider his relationship with Ukambani, highlighting the pressing need for services and employment in the region. Notably, Munyaka had been appointed as a Chief Administrative Secretary in the lands docket, but those appointments were later nullified by the court.
