Malava ODM Branch Topples Chairman in Leadership Coup

By Andanje Wakhungu

A faction of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in Malava has ousted their sub-branch chairman, John Waluvengo Iyadi, in a coup led by ward delegates and office bearers. Joseph Sikolia, backed by fellow delegates, spearheaded the removal, accusing Iyadi of lacking leadership qualities necessary to drive the party forward.

Sikolia, now the new ODM Malava sub-branch chairman, was appointed alongside Lazaro Anaswa as his deputy. The coup also saw Albert Sikolia assume the role of organizing secretary, with the support of delegates from the seven wards, women’s, and youth leagues. This reshuffle aims to strengthen the party at the grassroots level.

The disgruntled team expressed frustration with the former chairman’s leadership, alleging that his autocratic style and favoritism weakened the party. “In 2022, ODM failed to secure even a single MCA seat due to poor leadership at the sub-branch level,” stated Sikolia, emphasizing that the move was in the party’s best interest.

The newly appointed leaders called on Kakamega County ODM Chairman and Governor, Fernandez Barasa, to support the new office and collaborate to rejuvenate the party ahead of upcoming elections.

Ward delegate Sarah Muteshi from East Kabras echoed the sentiment, expressing optimism that the new leadership will restore ODM’s popularity in Malava.
