Governor James Orengo Faces a High-Stakes Decision in Choosing a Running Mate for 2027 Re-Election Bid

Siaya Governor James Orengo is grappling with a critical decision as he prepares for his 2027 re-election bid, that of selecting a running mate who can secure him support across the county. Following a public fallout with his current deputy, William Oduol, Governor Orengo must choose a new running mate who will be able to strengthen his campaign team for his bid for a second term.

However, this decision is not solely his; the ODM party retains the final say, with both party leadership and influential figures like Mama Ida Odinga traditionally playing key roles. The significance of this choice is underscored by past ODM interventions. In 2017, ODM’s leader Raila Odinga had to step in to select Dr. James Okumbe as deputy governor to then-Governor Rasanga, following his fallout with his deputy. This precedent indicates that Orengo’s running mate choice could again be influenced by the Odinga family.

A prime consideration is whether Dr. Okumbe, whose political activity waned after 2022, could make a comeback as Orengo’s running mate. However, multiple candidates are under consideration, each bringing distinct political advantages. Winnie Odinga, seen as a potential heir to the Odinga legacy, has emerged as a strong contender. Supporters say that if Raila’s brother Oburu retires from his senatorial role, Winnie could step in as Orengo’s running mate, positioning herself as a key player in Siaya politics.

Another top choice is Alego Usonga MP Sam Atandi, who hails from Siaya’s largest constituency and commands a significant voter base. Atandi’s strong support for Orengo makes him a viable running mate, especially if ODM wishes to secure the Alego Usonga vote. Meanwhile, Rarieda MP Otiende Amolo has his base of supporters who envision him not only as a deputy in 2027 but also as Orengo’s successor in 2032.

If Winnie were to join Orengo’s ticket, Rarieda could emerge as the favoured constituency for the senatorial seat, with Otiende Amolo positioned as a leading candidate. Ultimately, ODM’s internal dynamics and the Odinga family’s influence are likely to play crucial roles in shaping Siaya’s political landscape leading into the 2027 elections. For Orengo, navigating these complex alliances will be essential to ensure he secures a second term.
