The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM)’s National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC) has announced that grassroots elections will now take place on November 27, 2024, in polling units across Kenya’s 47 counties. Originally postponed due to severe flooding in April, these elections are an essential step in strengthening the party’s foundational leadership.
In a recent statement, NECC Chairperson Emily Awita emphasized the importance of inclusivity and urged all party members to familiarize themselves with the election guidelines, which are available on the party’s website. Members can also verify their registration details by dialing 483036#.
Under the NECC’s mandate, outlined in Article 61 of the ODM Party Constitution, elections will include 30 positions per polling unit, divided among the mainstream leadership, women’s league, and youth league. Positions for each category range from Chairperson and Vice Chairperson to Organizing Secretary and Treasurer, with a special focus on ensuring representation for persons with disabilities and minorities.
County Election Coordinators will work with polling unit coordinators to facilitate smooth voting, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through consensus or show of hands. These grassroots elections are a critical step for ODM members, as they provide a base for future party leadership selection at the national level.
ODM members are encouraged to actively participate and make their voices heard in shaping the future of the party.
