Church Dispute Lands Uasin Gishu Bishop in Court Over Defamation Claim

In his defense, Archbishop Barno has acknowledged that Aluchio is a member of his congregation but insists that he acted within his mandate as a church leader. He emphasized that the Ministry of Repentance and Holiness Church has a strict code of conduct that members are expected to follow. “It defies logic for Aluchio to seek intervention outside the church when he can submit himself to our internal disciplinary mechanisms,” Barno argued in his response to the lawsuit

A senior bishop with the Ministry of Repentance and Holiness Church, Uasin Gishu branch, affiliated with renowned preacher David Owuor, is embroiled in a legal battle after being sued by a long-time congregant. Simon Aluchio, a bachelor and a licensed process server, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Archbishop Jackson Barno at an Eldoret court. The accusations stem from a post made by Barno in a church WhatsApp group named ‘Overseers UG Main Altar’.

Aluchio alleges that the post, shared on June 5, 2024, at around 11:03 PM, portrayed him as immoral and evil. According to him, the bishop’s remarks have tarnished his reputation within the church community, particularly affecting his role as a youth ministry leader and his chances of finding a spouse from the congregation where he has worshipped for over 20 years.

“The publications have severely damaged my good standing in the church, youth ministry, my professional career, and both my private and public life,” Aluchio stated in his court filings.
The contentious post was part of a warning issued by the bishop to group members and youth in the church. In his message, Barno reportedly urged the members to pray for Aluchio to “learn what Christ stands for and be wise in his undertakings.”

The case, which is being heard by Principal Magistrate Peter Ireri, is set for mention on January 14, 2025.
