Three Nigerian nationals have been arrested following allegations that they gang-raped a woman at an apartment in Parklands, Nairobi. According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspects will face charges of gang rape under Section 10 of the Sexual Offences Act.
The suspects, identified as Amos Belumi (33), Tucin Mukun (30), and Olamide Lawrence (29), were apprehended after the victim reported the incident. Police confirmed that the woman had been taken to the hospital for medical attention.
The incident comes amid rising cases of rape and defilement across the country, as police and advocacy groups intensify campaigns to address the menace.
In Chesuwe village, Kapsabet, Nandi County, an eight-year-old girl was defiled recently. While the victim was rushed to the hospital, the suspect, identified as Malakwen, remains at large.
Meanwhile, in Mwandus, Kiambu County, a 27-year-old woman was raped during a robbery at her home. Three men, armed with crude weapons and wearing facemasks, ordered her to lie down as they ransacked the house. One of the suspects then raped the woman before the gang fled. The victim is receiving medical care, and police are pursuing the perpetrators.
In Nyeri, an employee of Gabanas Bar and Restaurant was gang-raped while heading home. The attackers also robbed her of personal belongings. Police intervened, injuring one of the suspects in a confrontation while the others escaped. The injured suspect, identified as Kelvin Wanjohi Kagunyi (21), was recently released from prison after serving a five-year sentence for drug possession.
Elsewhere in Kakamega last month, a gang kidnapped and gang-raped a woman in Luyeshe village while she was with her husband. Police arrested one of the suspects, Solomon Mwita alias Mutua, who has since been charged in court.
In another incident in Teso, a 38-year-old woman was assaulted and seriously injured by a man known to her following an altercation. She sustained injuries to her right lower limb and left hand and was referred to Bungoma County Referral Hospital for further treatment. Police are actively pursuing the assailant.
These cases underscore a worrying trend of rising sexual violence across the country, prompting calls for swift justice and intensified measures to protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable.
