‘When someone says this region is politically indebted to Kalonzo, it is misleading because we have never had any agreement with him,’ Wamatinga said. He emphasized that while former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is free to pursue personal alliances, the community will not compromise its collective political interests
Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga has dismissed claims that the Mt Kenya region owes a political debt to former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, firmly stating that no such agreement exists. Speaking yesterday, Wamatinga reiterated the region’s unwavering allegiance to President William Ruto’s administration.
“When someone says this region is politically indebted to Kalonzo, it is misleading because we have never had any agreement with him,” Wamatinga said. He emphasized that while former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is free to pursue personal alliances, the community will not compromise its collective political interests.
“If Rigathi Gachagua feels the need to pursue a political alliance with Kalonzo, that is his constitutional right. However, as a community, we will not be sold elsewhere,” he declared. Wamatinga’s remarks were in response to statements made by Gachagua during a recent tour of the Ukambani region, where he hinted at potential political realignments.
The Senator stressed that Mt Kenya’s political loyalty remains firmly with the Ruto administration, which he described as instrumental in ensuring the region’s representation in government.
“This government has seven Cabinet Secretaries and a Deputy President from our region. We have no justification to walk away from it,” Wamatinga said, adding that the region would fully support Ruto’s reelection bid in 2027.
Nyeri Town MP Duncan Mathenge echoed this sentiment, urging residents to focus on development instead of premature political campaigns. “Election matters will be addressed in 2027. For now, let’s focus on development and hold our leaders accountable,” Mathenge said.
Thuo Mathenge, leader of The National Democrats (TND) party, called for Mt Kenya residents to unite under a regional political party ahead of the next elections.
“This region must go into the 2027 elections with its own political party. The TND party is ready to safeguard our community’s interests,” Thuo said, warning against surrendering political loyalty to other regions.
The leaders spoke during the burial of Mzee Wanjohi Murimi in Mukurwe-ini Constituency, Nyeri County, where they underscored their commitment to the region’s economic and political interests.
Meanwhile, in neighbouring Murang’a County, government officials attending another funeral rallied residents to support Ruto’s administration.
Led by Economic Council Advisor Moses Kuria and Deputy State House Comptroller Simon Gikuru, the officials urged patience, assuring citizens that ongoing projects like the Mau Mau road, economic processing zones, and affordable housing would soon yield tangible benefits.
“If the president succeeds, the entire country will benefit. If he fails, we all feel the consequences,” Gikuru said. Governor Mutahi Kahiga, also present, emphasized the need for leaders to focus on development and avoid divisive politics, saying, “Political tolerance is essential to maintaining peace and progress.”
