Alcohol Smuggling at Dandora Stadium Sparks Security Concerns

The Dandora Stadium, a flagship project initiated by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, is under scrutiny, not for construction delays or corruption scandals, as in the past—but due to reports of fans smuggling alcohol into the venue during soccer matches.

Completed and inaugurated in March 2024 by current Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, the state-of-the-art facility boasts an artificial turf and a seating capacity of 4,000. Since its opening, it has hosted numerous events, including Kenya Premier League matches, drawing large crowds of residents and soccer enthusiasts.

However, concerns are mounting as some spectators have been observed consuming alcohol within the premises, a behaviour often linked to violent conduct among football fans worldwide. Football hooliganism, frequently attributed to alcohol consumption, remains a challenge globally, and the incidents at Dandora Stadium reflect this troubling trend.

Investigations have revealed that a local pub opposite the stadium, known as Casablanca, is a key source of canned beer and whisky smuggled into the venue during games. The exact methods used to sneak alcohol past security remain unclear, but sources suggest significant lapses in event security protocols.
In response to these developments, stakeholders are calling for immediate action. Proposals include enhancing security measures, implementing stricter bag checks at entry points, and possibly closing nearby bars during matchdays to curb alcohol smuggling.

The facility which symbolizes a new era for sports infrastructure in Nairobi, now faces a reputational challenge. Authorities and organizers must address these security concerns to preserve its status as a safe and family-friendly venue.
