Kenya Launches Mining Police Unit to Curb Illegal Resource Exploitation and Ensure Compliance

The Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs has launched a dedicated investigative arm, the Mining Police Unit (MPU), to combat illegal resource exploitation and mining across the country. This move aims to ensure compliance within the sector while promoting sustainable development and justice in the management of Kenya’s natural resources.

“We have a new commander, Commissioner of Police Fatuma Ali, who previously served as the Deputy Criminal Investigation Officer (DCIO) Kilimani. Anyone destroying the economy is no different from criminals committing robbery with violence,” said Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho during the launch.
Joho underscored the government’s commitment to safeguarding Kenya’s natural resources for the benefit of current and future generations. He emphasized that the Ministry is ready to support industry players who adhere to regulations, such as paying royalties on time and working collaboratively with local communities and county governments.

“When minerals are taken unlawfully, they are lost forever. I want to ensure we have teams in place to enforce the law. Additionally, I want to reassure industry players that the ministry is here to support you, provided you operate within the law,” he stated.

The CS also called on industries to strengthen partnerships with county governments and ensure they pay their rightful dues and royalties. He highlighted the importance of community involvement, stressing that communities are entitled to a one per cent gross income allocation from mining activities, which empowers them to determine their developmental priorities.

Joho issued a stern warning to those engaging in illegal mining and resource theft: “If you think you are too smart and want to steal our minerals, know that we will follow you wherever you go. With the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on board, we now have the capacity to enforce justice, even beyond our borders. We are watching,” he declared.

This initiative reinforces Kenya’s resolve to maintain accountability and equity in resource management, ensuring that all stakeholders—communities, industries, and government—benefit from the country’s mineral wealth.
