Former Busia Deputy Governor Moses Okhoba Mulomi was pronounced dead yesterday after collapsing while travelling to Nairobi for a board meeting. According to family sources, Mulomi fell gravely ill upon reaching Nakuru and, despite efforts to seek medical attention, succumbed to an ailment yet to be confirmed.
A Legacy of Leadership and Service
Mulomi had a distinguished career in both public service and agriculture. He worked for the Magombe Irrigation Scheme in Bunyalam as a Senior Manager before moving to Zambia, where he served as Director at the International Red Locust Control Organisation for Central and Southern Africa. Until his passing, he was a Director at the Kenya Cultural Centre Board.
In his condolence message, former Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong hailed Mulomi as a visionary leader who dedicated his life to serving humanity. “His outstanding service as my Deputy Governor and as County Executive Committee Member for Healthcare will remain an inspiration to many aspiring leaders,” Ojaamong said.
He further described Mulomi as a generous, cheerful, and influential figure, whose wise counsel and leadership will be deeply missed. “I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, relatives, and friends. My thoughts and prayers are with you,” he added.
Political Career and 2022 Gubernatorial Race
After serving five years as Busia’s Deputy Governor, Mulomi vied for the 2022 gubernatorial seat under the Democratic Alliance Party of Kenya (DAP-K), with Tom Ipomai as his running mate. However, he later withdrew from the race and endorsed ANC’s John Bunyasi, a move that saw Ipomai miss out on the ballot.
In the election, ODM’s Dr. Paul Otuoma, with Arthur Odera as his running mate, clinched the governorship. Bunyasi finished second, followed by Daniel Mogoria, while Moi University lecturer Michael Oloo of the National Liberty Party placed fourth.
Mulomi’s passing marks the end of a distinguished career in leadership, governance, and public service, leaving a legacy that will be remembered in Busia County and beyond.
