Governor Kimani Wamatangi has declared that he will not allow Kiambu County to become a political battleground at the expense of development. “Politicians have made it a habit to come here and play politics after securing development projects in their own areas. I will not allow this—let them take their politics elsewhere,” said the county chief.
Speaking while issuing bursary forms in Githunguri and Lari constituencies, Wamatangi stated that political infighting had previously stalled development in the county and brought shame to the region.
“They have come here before to undermine us and use our people as pawns in their political games,” he said. The Governor was accompanied by Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), led by Majority Leader Godfrey Mucheke.
At the same time, Wamatangi hit out at certain Kiambu MPs, accusing them of attempting to exploit his office to grab public land and siphon county funds through dubious tenders. He attributed his strained relationship with these politicians to his refusal to comply with their demands.
Referring to the 700 acres of land surrendered by Del Monte Ltd, a pineapple-growing and processing firm, Wamatangi revealed that his fallout with the MPs stemmed from his rejection of their proposal to subdivide part of the land among leaders.
“They suggested that every leader should be allocated five acres, while I, as Governor, should receive ten. I refused, and as a result, I invited their wrath due to my firm stance against corruption,” he stated.
Majority Leader Mucheke defended the Governor against political attacks over his poultry initiative, where he has been distributing chicks, fertiliser, and maize seeds to farmers.
Mucheke, who represents Kalimoni Ward, pledged continued support for Wamatangi’s administration despite criticism from political opponents.
“Our MCAs stood by the Governor when there was an attempt to impeach him barely a year into office. We will continue to defend him and support his projects for the benefit of our people,” he affirmed.
He further highlighted key achievements under Wamatangi’s leadership, including the construction of six Level 4 hospitals, 239 new Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) classrooms, and the acquisition of 15 ambulances in just two years.
Governor Wamatangi has previously clashed with several MPs from the county over the construction of markets, insisting that such projects fall under the jurisdiction of the county government.
