Raila Odinga’s Political Future Under Scrutiny As MoU With Ruto Raises Questions

Raila’s allies assert his influence transcends titles, citing his broad national support. They dismiss speculation as an understatement of his stature. Some suggest he may favour a kingmaker role over another presidential bid, recalling his 2002 endorsement of Mwai Kibaki. The recent MoU signing at KICC has intensified speculation of a possible ‘Ruto Tosha’ nod from Raila

As the controversy over the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga unfolds, Kenyans are questioning its implications for ODM’s leadership and supporters. Sources suggest Ruto has promised Raila a share of governmental duties, with some insiders hinting at a non-executive Prime Minister role, a position not enshrined in Kenya’s 2010 Constitution.

Yet Raila’s allies insist his influence surpasses such a title, citing his broad support across Kenya’s ethnic, tribal, and religious divides. They dismiss the rumours as underestimating his stature. Meanwhile, others believe Raila might prefer a kingmaker role over another presidential bid, recalling his 2002 endorsement of Mwai Kibaki, which secured Kibaki’s landslide win. The recent MoU signing at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) has fueled speculation of a “Ruto Tosha” nod from Raila.

Alternatively, some propose the MoU outlines a retirement package for Raila, tied to Ruto winning a second term through 2032. This could grant Raila significant sway over the government during that period. Confidential sources claim a power-sharing deal exists, potentially positioning an Odinga family member for a key state role soon.

Attention has turned to Raila’s son, Raila Odinga Jr., as a possible 2027 contender. Despite his low public profile and business focus—unlike his late brother Fidel, once seen as Raila’s heir—sources suggest he might step into politics if the Ruto-Raila pact holds. Should he decline, Raila’s daughter, Rosemary Odinga, could benefit instead. The Odinga family favours her for the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), aiming to preserve Raila’s legacy before his retirement. With Siaya Senator Dr Oburu Odinga possibly stepping down, Rosemary might target a Siaya County seat, Senate, Women Representative, Bondo MP, or even join James Orengo’s 2027 ticket as a running mate.
