Gideon Moi Declines Baringo Senate Bid Amid Pressure to Reconcile with Ruto

The sudden death of Senator William Cheptumo has shaken Baringo County’s political landscape, triggering a by-election that has renewed interest in former senator and KANU chairman Gideon Moi. However, sources close to Moi confirm that he is unlikely to contest the seat, primarily due to tensions with President William Ruto.

Following Cheptumo’s passing, Moi’s name emerged as a potential candidate for the vacant Senate seat. Yet, insiders indicate that he is reluctant to engage in an electoral contest that could lead to further humiliation by Ruto. The two leaders have maintained a strained relationship since the 2022 general election when Ruto accused Moi of attempting to usurp Kalenjin’s leadership.

Aligned with the Azimio la Umoja coalition, Moi supported ODM leader Raila Odinga in 2022. Ruto’s allies perceived this endorsement as a betrayal, widening the divide between the two Rift Valley powerhouses. Despite efforts by mutual allies to broker reconciliation, including Odinga’s suggestion to include Moi in a more inclusive government, these attempts failed.

Moi rejected Odinga’s proposition, opting to remain in opposition. He has since told his inner circle that he is committed to holding the Kenya Kwanza administration accountable, asserting that his principles and stature preclude any accommodation with President Ruto.

Observers suggest Moi’s decision reflects caution. A second defeat in Baringo, especially to a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate, could cement Ruto’s dominance within the Kalenjin bloc and further diminish Moi’s political influence. In 2022, Cheptumo defeated Moi decisively, securing 141,777 votes to Moi’s 71,480.

Despite calls from local leaders, including Joseph Makilap (Baringo North), William Kamket (Tiaty), and Governor Benjamin Cheboi, for unity with Ruto to strengthen Kalenjin solidarity, Moi remains steadfast. He believes the time for reconciliation has passed.

Meanwhile, speculation surrounds other potential candidates, such as former Cabinet Secretary for Co-operatives Simon Chelugui. Having reportedly fallen out with influential figures at State House, Chelugui may seek a political comeback through the Baringo Senate seat.

As the by-election approaches, Baringo’s electoral dynamics will serve as a barometer for Rift Valley politics and a test of whether Gideon Moi can re-invent his political legacy from the opposition benches.
