Wamuchomba Ditches Gachagua, Backs Matiang’i in Political Realignment

Kiambu Woman Representative Gathoni Wamuchomba is reportedly planning to part ways with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in favour of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i. Sources close to the outspoken MP reveal she has met Matiang’i three times since his recent return from the United States, sparking speculation of a significant political realignment.

Wamuchomba is said to be frustrated with Gachagua’s leadership, criticising his dictatorial style, rigidity, and narrow focus on consolidating the Mt. Kenya voter base. “Kenya is more than just a region,” she reportedly stated, advocating for a political movement that resonates across all 47 counties. Her shift toward Matiang’i is viewed as a strategic step to position herself as a potential running mate if Matiang’i emerges as a joint opposition candidate in the next presidential race. She has firmly ruled out joining Gachagua’s newly formed Democratic Congress Party (DCP).

Known for her populist stance, Wamuchomba has become a vocal critic of President William Ruto’s administration within the Kenya Kwanza coalition. She was among the first ruling coalition MPs to oppose controversial policies, earning praise from disillusioned Kenyans. Her strong opposition to the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHA) and steadfast support for coffee farmers have solidified her reputation as a principled and fearless leader.

A former popular Kikuyu radio presenter, Wamuchomba, joins a growing list of politicians who have distanced themselves from Gachagua, citing ideological differences and frustrations with his leadership. Her next move is poised to reshape the political landscape as the 2027 succession race takes shape.
