Parents Demand Ruto’s Action on Finland Scholarship Fraud

Parents of students impacted by the Finland scholarship scandal have urged President William Ruto to intervene and ensure justice. The scandal cost students over KSh 1 billion, duped by Uasin Gishu County officials.

Noah Kemboi, representing affected families, urged President Ruto to honour his 2023 Devolution Conference pledge in Eldoret to hold those responsible accountable. “We urge President Ruto to fulfil his promise to support stranded youth, many now idle at home after being conned,” Kemboi said.

Former Uasin Gishu Governor and current Senator Jackson Mandago faces scrutiny after a County Assembly committee found three of his administration’s officials culpable. Mandago and co-accused face 10 charges, including conspiracy to steal, abuse of office, and forgery. They allegedly stole KSh 1.1 billion from KCB Bank in Eldoret between March 2021 and September 2022.

The scandal sparked public outrage at the Devolution Conference, where Mandago was accused in Ruto’s presence. The President stated, “Anybody who engages in corruption will not be spared by this administration. Everybody will carry their own cross.”

Governor Jonathan Bii called for legislative reforms to regulate future scholarship programs. “We see youth as our future’s driving force. My administration is committed to their empowerment and seeks your support to ensure their welfare,” Bii wrote to the Assembly. Meanwhile, parents and students plan a fundraiser next month to support affected students’ local education.
