MP Arama Slams ‘Primitive’ Arrests, Backs Matiang’i for President

Nakuru Town West Member of Parliament, Samwel Arama, has sharply criticised how security agencies are handling arrests, particularly those involving elected leaders, activists, and individuals in high-ranking positions, some of whom have allegedly died under mysterious circumstances.

Arama termed the dramatic arrests as “primitive” and reminiscent of the authoritarian tactics used during the one-party era. He argued that individuals implicated in wrongdoing should be summoned to appear before investigators rather than being subjected to public humiliation during arrests.

“This culture where EACC and DCI officers arrest leaders who are merely suspects, before they are even condemned, must stop. It only creates unnecessary tension and animosity,” he said.

Arama singled out the recent police raid on the home of Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, describing it as a politically motivated act of harassment and intimidation. He insisted that such operations serve only to embarrass leaders and suppress dissent.

The legislator further warned against the alleged extrajudicial killings of young protestors, particularly those in the Gen Z movement, stating that if they committed offences, they should be arrested and arraigned in court, not killed.

He accused security agencies of being used as instruments of political persecution by the government, especially targeting leaders who are opposed to President William Ruto’s administration.

“We hear that they are planning to raid the homes of a number of leaders opposed to Ruto’s broad-based coalition government. If this behaviour is allowed to continue, it could definitely polarise the country,” he cautioned.

Arama also weighed in on the political fate of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, claiming that he had been abandoned by the very regime he helped bring to power. He warned Kenyans against supporting leaders who later betrayed the public’s trust.

“It is unfortunate that Gachagua is being fought by a government for which he spent his energy and resources to bring into power,” he remarked.

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Arama urged Kenyans to rally behind former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i for the presidency, arguing that he has the leadership qualities necessary to stabilise Kenya both economically and politically.

In a surprising turn, the MP also launched a scathing attack on the Azimio leader Raila Odinga, branding him a traitor for allegedly abandoning his allies during critical political moments.

Arama’s remarks come at a time of heightened political tension in the country, as questions persist regarding the state’s use of force, rising authoritarianism, and the direction of national leadership.
