Gideon Moi, Chelugui in Spotlight as Youth Surge Shakes Up Baringo Senate Race

By The Weekly Vision Political Desk

The battle to replace the late Baringo Senator William Cheptumo has sparked a dramatic political face-off between seasoned political titans and a rising generation of youthful challengers, setting the stage for one of the most-watched Senate by-elections in the Rift Valley.

At the heart of the contest are KANU Chairman Gideon Moi and former Labour Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui, both of whom are widely viewed as frontrunners with deep political roots and national recognition. Their involvement signals a high-stakes battle, not just for the Baringo Senate seat, but for broader influence in the Rift Valley ahead of 2027.

Gideon Moi, who lost the seat to Cheptumo in the 2022 General Election, is reported to be making a strategic comeback. Though yet to formally announce his bid, Moi has been increasingly visible in Baringo, attending local functions and engaging community leaders. His possible return is being interpreted as a move to reclaim political relevance in a county long associated with the Moi family’s legacy.

On the other hand, Simon Chelugui, a seasoned technocrat and political strategist, has hit the campaign trail with renewed vigour. Though he has not publicly declared his candidacy, insiders within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) confirm that Chelugui is actively mobilising support, aiming to secure the party’s nomination in a crowded field.

Observers view the by-election as a referendum on UDA’s dominance in Baringo, and an opportunity for KANU to reassert itself in a region where its political fortunes have waned. The party’s revival hinges on Moi’s next move.

Meanwhile, at least eight youthful aspirants have thrown their hats into the UDA ring, presenting a vibrant generational challenge to the political old guard. Among them are Daniel Kiptoo, Wycliffe Tobole, Victor Sumukwo Chepkunur, Linus Kamket, Vincent Chemitei, Felix Kiprono Chelaite, Emmanuel Ngetuny, and Evans Bett Mundulel.

These young contenders are running on a platform of transformation, economic inclusivity, and grassroots empowerment. Daniel Kiptoo, whose campaign slogan is “Unity, Accountability, and Prosperity for Baringo”, has pledged to champion legislation for youth and women empowerment, enhance bursary schemes, and push for more technical training institutions.

“The time for youth to lead is now,” Kiptoo declared, calling for bold, forward-looking leadership to tackle unemployment and insecurity.

Insecurity remains a defining issue. Wycliffe Tobole has promised to prioritise peace-building and community policing initiatives. Victor Sumukwo Chepkunur, who hails from the banditry-prone Bartabwa region, has vowed to table legislation for the compensation of victims of violence.

“I’ve seen friends and relatives perish in bandit attacks. We must restore dignity and justice to affected communities,” Sumukwo said.

Former Bartabwa Ward MCA Reuben Chepsongol, now a director at the Kerio Valley Development Authority, has entered the race with a focus on homegrown security solutions and county unity. Isaiah Kirukmet, who secured over 45,000 votes in the 2022 UDA primaries, is presenting himself as the natural successor to Cheptumo, citing experience and grassroots support.

Silas Tochim, a former Tenges ward MCA and current Director of the Tourism Fund, is banking on Baringo’s untapped tourism potential as a pathway to economic recovery and employment.

Also in the race is Gilbert G. Malema, a vocal critic of the Kenya Kwanza administration. Though his party affiliation remains unclear, Malema is positioning himself as an independent voice for change.

Adding to the dynamic is youth activist Billy Yatich, who has publicly endorsed the youthful aspirants, calling them “catalysts for positive change” and challenging elder leaders to mentor rather than block new talent.

The by-election was triggered by the death of Senator William Cheptumo in February after a short illness. As campaigns intensify ahead of UDA nominations, Baringo voters are faced with a defining choice: return to established leadership with Chelugui or Moi, or embrace a new generation eager to chart a different path.
