Afdera, a volcanic locality within Ethiopia’s Afar Region, has recently experienced severe flooding and earthquakes, resulting in displacement and a growing humanitarian crisis. Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray Region, remains impoverished after years of armed conflict between regional rebel forces and the national government.
The new fibre optic line will significantly improve internet connectivity in this part of Ethiopia, thereby expanding Safaricom’s clientele and digital footprint. The project was launched on 1st August 2025 at a ceremony attended by officials from the Afar Regional Administration, including the Deputy Commissioner for Disaster and Risk Management, Mr Ali Mohammed, the report further indicates.
Safaricom, whose majority shareholding is held by a Kenyan-led consortium, prides itself on community service that goes beyond infrastructure and financial ventures. In line with this commitment, the fibre optic launch was accompanied by a donation of relief aid to support families displaced by the recent flooding in Afdera.
According to the report, “The donation, valued at 500,000 Birr (equivalent to KSh500,000), included 1,000 square metres of tenting material, 200 litres of edible oil, 500 kilograms of rice, and 500 kilograms of white flour, aimed at assisting vulnerable communities during their recovery.”
A few years ago, Ethiopia liberalised its telecommunications sector, allowing a consortium co-owned by Safaricom Plc to invest in the country’s vast market. Since then, the company has significantly expanded its infrastructure across Ethiopia, which has a population of over 100 million.
Deputy Commissioner Ali Mohammed praised Safaricom’s efforts, emphasising the importance of both improved connectivity and community resilience. Safaricom Ethiopia reaffirmed its dedication to expanding digital infrastructure nationwide while actively supporting communities affected by environmental disasters, reflecting its commitment to fostering inclusive growth across the country.
