Busia County Governor Dr Paul Otuoma joined bereaved families and teachers of Ebenezer Academy for a requiem mass for the seven pupils who perished in a road accident along the Webuye/Bungoma highway. The mass was held on Thursday at the Busia Polytechnic ground where mourners paid their last respect.
The Governor questioned the rationale behind most of our road engineers. “I am too amazed with some of our road engineers, why don’t they create solutions by designing safer roads for both motorists and pedestrians?” he asked.
He added that they will just come out and erect a large signpost reading “BLACK SPOT,” after several accidents instead of redesigning the road. They then expect to be paid. Busia County Commissioner Mr Kipchumbs Ruto challenged the MPs who were present to sign a petition and forward it to the National Government through parliament for the redesigning of most of those roads termed as black spots, saying that the same road has consumed so many lives.
Area MP Geoffrey Odanga opined that all roads used by transit vehicles should not be neglected because the government is earning a lot of revenue from truckers, the MP also said that the ongoing expansion of the Busia border/Korinda junction road is something that should have been done 10 years ago but unfortunately, donors who were to fund the expansion, diverted the funds elsewhere after lack of interest from the last county regime.
Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera, while echoing Mr Odanga’s sentiment, observed that at least Busia is regaining its lost glory through the ongoing expansion of its main road, urging residents of Busia not to repeat the same mistake by Bungoma voters in the last elections who replaced a working governor with a very incompetent one, they are now regretting. Dr Otuoma thanked Hon. Nabii for recognizing his efforts in transforming Busia County.
