The African Union Executive Council has made a pivotal decision, allowing the Eastern African region to nominate candidates for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC). The decision has set the stage for Azimio leader Raila Odinga to enter the race for AUC chair, with elections scheduled for February 2025.
With the race gaining momentum ten months ahead of the elections, the future of the African Union was a key topic during the 22nd extraordinary session of the Executive Council. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who advocated for the adoption of the decision, emphasized that it aligns with Kenya’s push for equity and diversity within the AU.
The decision, supported by the Permanent Representatives Committee of the African Union, establishes that the East African region will provide candidates for the chairperson position. This clears the path for Kenya to nominate its candidate, potentially including Raila Odinga. Additionally, the decision designates the Northern Africa region to nominate candidates for the deputy chairperson role, while the Central, Southern, and Western regions will compete for six commissioner positions.
The unanimous recommendations presented by the Permanent Representative Committee reflect a collective effort to ensure effective leadership within the AUC. Kenya, along with the Eastern Africa region, will work towards building consensus around its candidate, aiming to unite the continent under a strong leadership framework.
As preparations continue, Kenya remains committed to fostering collaboration among member states to ensure the selection of capable leaders who will drive the African Union’s agenda forward and promote unity across the continent.
