Six suspects, among them four Machakos County officials, were remanded in custody last week pending the completion of investigations into the theft of medical equipment in the Masinga sub-county after the investigating officer asked for ten more days to complete the investigation.
Pauline Kiura, John Wambua, Anthony Mutinda, Benson Kairos, Onesmus Kavitha, and Mathenge Ndungi are accused of breaking into various health facilities in the sub-county and stealing medical equipment. The offences were allegedly committed between April 29 and August 8 this year.
Kithimani Principal Magistrate Paul Wechuli granted the police one week to complete their investigations, and the accused persons were remanded in police custody until August 21, when the case will be heard. Addressing a public participation forum on Tuesday at Kisukioni Market in Matungulu Sub-County, Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti said four county staff were among the suspects.
She warned health workers engaging in the theft of government medicine and equipment that their days were numbered. She also appealed to the public to help her capture individuals stealing drugs from public hospitals.
