The FBI has arrested Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, a 27-year-old Afghan man from Oklahoma City, who officials say was plotting an Election Day attack inspired by the Islamic State (ISIS). According to the U.S. Justice Department, Tawhedi had planned to target large crowds next month on Election Day.
Investigators revealed that Tawhedi, who entered the U.S. in 2021 on a special immigrant visa, intended to carry out the attack alongside a juvenile co-conspirator. Both expected to die as martyrs during the assault, according to charging documents.
In recent weeks, Tawhedi took steps to advance his plans, including purchasing AK-47 rifles, liquidating his family’s assets, and buying one-way tickets for his wife and child to return to Afghanistan. The FBI apprehended Tawhedi on Monday, preventing what could have been a devastating attack. The investigation is ongoing, and officials are working to determine whether there are any further threats associated with the plot.
