US-based d.light, a global leader in affordable household products and financing for low-income communities, has been selected to participate in a key government initiative aimed at boosting access to off-grid solar home systems and clean cookstoves in underserved rural counties of Kenya.
As part of the Kenya Off-Grid Solar Access Project (KOSAP), funded by the World Bank, d.light will deliver solar energy and clean cooking solutions to over 150,000 people currently without access to electricity and safe cooking methods. Through its innovative “PayGo” instalment service, d.light ensures these essential products remain affordable for low-income households.
The KOSAP program targets 14 counties, primarily in the northern, eastern, and southeastern regions, including West Pokot, Turkana, Marsabit, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and more. Notably, Narok in the southwest is also included.
With 24% of Kenyans still lacking access to electricity, and 34% of rural residents reliant on polluting fuels like biomass and kerosene, d.light’s contribution is set to make a significant impact. Managing Director Karanja Njoroge noted that while Kenya’s economy has grown, many rural citizens remain off the grid and vulnerable to climate change.
“d.light has been part of Kenya’s journey since 2008, and our Nairobi headquarters continues to drive our efforts to bring safe, renewable energy to communities most in need,” said Njoroge. “Thanks to KOSAP, a brighter future is within reach for thousands of rural households.”
Launched in 2018 as part of Kenya’s Vision 2030 development plan, KOSAP is supported by a US$150 million World Bank grant. d.light’s participation focuses on Component 2 of the program, with a US$15.7 million allocation for off-grid solar solutions and clean cookstoves. This initiative aligns with Vision 2030’s goal of transforming Kenya into an industrialized, middle-income country while providing a high quality of life in a sustainable, secure environment.
