Four new members have been appointed to the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), the body responsible for implementing the country’s monetary policy based on economic growth and inflation targets set by the National Treasury. The new members, Ms Isis Nyong’o, Dr Kemboi Kipruto, Dr Freshia Mugo, and Mr Jared Osoro, officially joined the MPC on Monday, following their appointment on November 22.
Ms. Isis Nyong’o holds an MBA from Stanford University and a Bachelor of Arts in human biology from the same institution. With over 12 years of experience as a non-executive director, her expertise spans the public, private, academic, and non-profit sectors. She currently serves on the boards of the Nairobi Securities Exchange and LGT Venture Philanthropy and has previously been involved with Equity Bank Group. Nyong’o has contributed to the digital economy in Africa through her work at Google and has advised several boards, including the Africa Research Centre at Harvard Business School.
Dr. Kipruto holds a PhD in Economics from Moi University, as well as a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Statistics from Kenyatta University. He is a Certified Investment and Financial Analyst (CIFA) and a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Dr. Kipruto is an academic trainer at the Kenya School of Revenue Administration and a lecturer at Moi University. His expertise in research, policy analysis, and statistical data analytics is complemented by a strong record in program development and implementation.
Dr. Mugo earned a PhD in International Finance from Sogang University in South Korea. She also holds an MBA in Finance and a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting from Kenyatta University. Currently a Senior Lecturer and Academic Director for PhD programs at Strathmore University, Dr. Mugo has extensive experience in financial markets, academic research, and regulatory roles. She previously served as Acting Chair of the Kenya Anti-Money Laundering Advisory Board (AMLAB) and has played a key role in establishing Kenya’s derivatives market.
Mr. Osoro is an economist with expertise in international macroeconomics, financial and monetary economics, econometrics, and development economics. He holds degrees from the University of Nairobi, the University of Zimbabwe, and the University of Bradford. Osoro has worked at the East African Development Bank and the Kenya Bankers Association and is currently leading a financial sector development advisory program at FSD Africa. His research covers topics such as development financing, regional financial system integration, and central bank policies. The Chairman of the MPC, Dr. Kamau Thugge, who is also the CBK Governor, welcomed the new members to the committee.
These new appointments replace Dr Benson Akong’o Ateng’, Dr Margaret Kwengwa Chemengich, Prof. Jane Wanjiku Kabubo-Mariara, and Mr Humphrey Mugambi Muga, who had been part of the MPC since their appointment on August 24, 2018.
