Sports Against Vices: Shilunji’s December Tournament Keeps Malava Youth Engaged

Learners from Malava Constituency are benefiting from a month-long sports extravaganza designed to shield them from drug abuse and other anti-social vices during the December holiday. The initiative, spearheaded by Nelson Shilunji, patron of the Avashu clan, aims to engage young people in meaningful activities that nurture their talents and pave the way for opportunities in the sports industry.

The Nelson Shilunji Sports Tournament, launched at Mahira Secondary School in South Kabras Ward, features various sports, including soccer for boys and girls, tug-of-war, and bullfighting. The event culminates in grand finals on January 1, 2025, where winners will receive trophies, cash prizes, and other rewards in a colourful ceremony that will be graced by Shilunji and other dignitaries.

Speaking through his representative, Daniel Shitanda, Shilunji emphasized the importance of guiding youth during the festive season, a period he noted is rife with peer pressure and temptations that can lead to drug abuse, crime, and early pregnancies.

“During this festive season, learners are at high risk of being lured into irresponsible behavior. Through sports, we are cushioning them against such vices while giving them a chance to discover and explore their talents,” Shilunji remarked.

The tournament, now in its second edition, is part of a broader initiative by the Avashu clan to foster responsible behaviour among young people while promoting talent development. Shilunji highlighted sports as a powerful equalizer that not only deters immoral activities but also creates pathways to success for talented youth.

Investing in Education and Community Development

In addition to his sports sponsorship, Shilunji, who also serves as the National Director of Disaster Management, has established an education fund to support vulnerable learners in the community. This initiative supplements the Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF), ensuring that needy students access quality education.

“Education is the ultimate equalizer. It is through education that we can bring the desired change to our community. That’s why I am committed to supporting our learners and pushing for the development of a society of elites who can transform our constituency,” Shilunji stated.

Shilunji has also championed infrastructure development in schools across Malava, further demonstrating his dedication to uplifting the community.

The sports tournament underscores Shilunji’s dual commitment to promoting youth empowerment and fostering educational advancement. By engaging young people in positive activities and supporting their academic pursuits, the initiative offers a holistic approach to addressing the challenges facing Malava’s youth and building a brighter future for the constituency.
