Etihad Airways marked a major milestone on Sunday with the launch of its new direct service between Abu Dhabi and Nairobi, further solidifying its impressive network expansion for 2024. Operating through the state-of-the-art Zayed International Airport, the new route connects the UAE capital to one of Africa’s most vibrant and dynamic cities.
“The introduction of our Nairobi service enhances our growing network while responding to strong travel demand between the UAE and Kenya, as demonstrated by today’s completely full inaugural flight,” said Arik De, Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer at Etihad Airways.
He added, “As both Abu Dhabi and Kenya experience remarkable tourism growth and set ambitious targets for the future, this route creates valuable opportunities for both destinations. The service strengthens the important ties between our regions, supporting Abu Dhabi’s position as a global aviation hub while providing enhanced access to Kenya’s thriving tourism market.”
The launch is timely for Kenya’s tourism industry, which is on a strong growth trajectory. Visitor numbers are projected to hit 3 million in 2024, with the government targeting 5 million in subsequent years.
The Nairobi service follows Etihad Airways’ successful rollout of new routes to Antalya, Bali, Boston, Jaipur, Kozhikode, Mykonos, Nice, Qassim, and Thiruvananthapuram earlier this year. Looking ahead to 2025, the airline plans to add 13 new destinations, including Warsaw and Prague in June, Al Alamein and Atlanta in July, Taipei in September, and Tunis, Chiang Mai, Hong Kong, Hanoi, and Algiers in November, among others.
The Abu Dhabi-Nairobi route links two globally distinctive destinations. Abu Dhabi attracts visitors with its fusion of modern marvels and rich heritage, including the iconic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and luxury shopping and entertainment. Nairobi, renowned as East Africa’s business and cultural hub, is celebrated as the “Green City in the Sun.” The city uniquely houses Nairobi National Park within its boundaries and serves as a gateway to Kenya’s iconic wildlife and cultural attractions.
This new service reflects Etihad’s continued commitment to enhancing global connectivity while unlocking valuable opportunities for tourism, trade, and business between the Middle East and Africa.
