Kakamega County Pledges Security Boost for Bodaboda Operators

Bodaboda operators in Kakamega County have a reason to smile following the county government’s promise to enhance security and protect them from harassment by county enforcement officers.

Deputy Governor Ayub Savula made the announcement after receiving complaints about cases of harassment and extortion targeting bodaboda riders. Speaking at a fundraiser organized by the Lurambi Sub-County Bodaboda Community-Based Organization (CBO) to purchase a new bus, Savula decried the increasing insecurity faced by operators as they work to support their families.

Savula assured the operators that the county government would partner with them to root out corrupt enforcement officers who demand bribes. “We will not tolerate officers who misuse their authority. Together, we’ll identify and take action against them,” he said.

During the event, the Deputy Governor also urged the public to scrutinize leaders’ records of service delivery ahead of the 2027 elections. Highlighting his own track record as a former Member of Parliament for Lugari Constituency, Savula pointed out the projects he implemented during his tenure, which he claimed have had a lasting impact on the community.

He pledged to work towards improving the working environment for bodaboda operators. “Next time we contribute funds, we want to ensure investments are sound. I am ready to collaborate with your officials when they visit my office to decide where to purchase the new bus,” he explained.

In a bold gesture of support, Savula committed to acting as the guarantor for the bus purchase, offering to secure the deal with his own land title deed. “If the operators fail to repay the loan, I am prepared to sell my land to cover the cost,” he added, reaffirming his dedication to the welfare of the bodaboda community.

With this pledge, the county government aims to foster a safer and more conducive working environment for bodaboda operators, signaling a step forward in addressing their grievances.
