Kakamega County Women Representative Elsie Muhanda has called on the government to reduce the cost of hospital bills for women at the County General Hospital maternity wing. This follows the plight of many women who, after giving birth, are unable to afford the high hospital bills, with amounts reaching Sh.15,000 for normal deliveries and Sh.30,000 for caesarian sections.
During a visit to the facility on Christmas Day, where she distributed food to patients and collaborated with media queens to provide sanitary pads, Elsie highlighted the urgent need for support to assist mothers and newborns. She emphasized that many women have been discharged but remain in the hospital due to financial constraints.
Elsie urged the County Government of Kakamega to emulate initiatives like Murang’a Governor Dr. Francis Kang’ata’s, who actively supports his constituents. She recalled the success of Oparanya Care, which significantly assisted pregnant women, and stressed that devolution was intended to improve the welfare of citizens.
“It is time for the government to step in and support mothers with their newborns. If nothing is done, more women may opt to give birth at home, which could result in increased mortality rates,” Elsie cautioned.
Additionally, Elsie raised concerns over the challenges in registering with the Social Health Authority (SHA), urging the county government to take swift action. She praised Murang’a Governor Dr. Kang’ata’s efforts in registering all his residents into SHA and pledged to cover the registration costs for street children for one year.
During her visit to street children in Kakamega, Elsie observed that many lacked proper identification, making it difficult for them to access services. She promised to assist them in obtaining IDs and birth certificates through Huduma Centres.
“As a mother and a leader, I will ensure street families receive their constitutional rights. During this festive season, we must prioritize the well-being of the vulnerable over leisure,” Elsie said.
She also called on Huduma Centre officials to open dedicated desks for SHA registration and sensitization, ensuring locals are well-informed and supported.
