President William Ruto has announced measures to address the financial and management challenges facing Moi University. Speaking at the Ngeria Technical Training Institute in Kapseret Constituency, Uasin Gishu County, during the institute’s opening on Friday, the President revealed that he has established a committee to evaluate the university’s issues and recommend sustainable solutions.
“We will put in place an efficient management team and allocate it enough resources so that Moi University can thrive like the other public universities,” he stated. The President was accompanied by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Governors Jonathan Bii (Uasin Gishu) and Stephen Sang (Nandi). During the event, he also commissioned a state-of-the-art ICT lab, underscoring his administration’s commitment to leveraging technology for education and development.
Digital Transformation and Responsibility
President Ruto highlighted his government’s progress in rolling out 100,000 kilometres of fiber optic infrastructure to connect 100,000 public institutions to the Internet. He encouraged the youth to harness the opportunities presented by the digital space for income-generating activities and entrepreneurship.
“Instead of using the Internet to post people in coffins, use it to monetize your talents and create jobs for yourselves,” he urged, expressing concern over the misuse of social media for immoral and criminal purposes, including the creation and sharing of computer-generated images depicting people in coffins and graves.
The President also criticized leaders encouraging such behaviour, warning that their influence could lead to a generation that self-destructs. He called for responsible guidance to foster good morals and constructive use of the Internet.
Rural Electrification and Infrastructure Development
Earlier, in Cheboror, Kesses Constituency, President Ruto connected the family of Mzee Simeon Nyango to electricity under the Rural Electrification Programme. He announced that the government is investing KSh1.8 billion to connect 20,000 households in Uasin Gishu County to electricity over the next three years.
This initiative aligns with the government’s broader goal of connecting one million households to electricity within three years.
During his working tour of Uasin Gishu County, the President also inspected construction progress at the Kimuri Earth Dam in Kapseret Constituency, the upgrading of Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret City, and opened the Turbo Sub-County offices.
President Ruto assured Kenyans of his government’s efforts to stabilize and grow the economy. He highlighted key achievements, including:
- Reducing the dollar exchange rate from KSh160 to KSh128.
- Lowering inflation from 9.6% in 2022 to 2.8%, the lowest in two decades.
- Boosting food production through the subsidized fertilizer program, which has also reduced food costs. He urged Kenyans to focus on unity and support the government’s transformation agenda, warning against divisive rhetoric.
“This country can only move forward if we are united. That is how we are going to have a nation that all of us will be proud of,” he concluded.
