The National Assembly has approved President William Ruto’s nomination of two former county governors and a former Cabinet Secretary from President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration to fill Cabinet vacancies in the Agriculture and Livestock Development, ICT, and Trade ministries.
Former Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, ex-Kiambu Governor William Kabogo, and former Nakuru County Chief Lee Kinyanjui are set to assume these positions. Kagwe previously served as Health CS in Kenyatta’s administration, while Kabogo and Kinyanjui were defeated in the August 2022 elections.
During the approval motion debate, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah stressed that Cabinet Secretaries must prioritize serving all Kenyans, beyond regional affiliations or interests.
“They must recognize their collective responsibility to serve the people of Kenya. If any Cabinet Secretary feels dissatisfied with their assignment, the honorable thing is to resign,” Ichung’wah stated.
Minority Leader Junet Mohammed supported this stance, urging appointees to step down if they disagreed with government policies. “In public service, when you can no longer align with the government’s direction, the best course of action is to resign. Staying on only to stir discord is both unnecessary and unprincipled,” said Junet.
The nominees now await formal appointments before officially taking up their roles.
