Kalonzo Musyoka Faces Mounting Political Challenges Ahead of 2027 Elections

As the political landscape begins to take shape for the 2027 general elections, Wiper Democratic Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka finds himself at the centre of growing turbulence within his strongholds of Kitui, Machakos, and Makueni counties. Once considered the undisputed kingpin of the region, Kalonzo now faces significant challenges from both within his party and the broader political arena. In Kitui County, Kalonzo is embroiled in a potential showdown with former Governor Charity Ngilu.

Sources reveal that in 2022, Kalonzo and ODM leader Raila Odinga persuaded Ngilu to step aside from the gubernatorial race, promising her a cabinet position in the Azimio administration. This move paved the way for Peter Malombe, a former governor, to reclaim the seat with Kalonzo’s backing.

The arrangement, however, included an understanding that Malombe would serve his final term and later cede the seat to Ngilu for her second term. As the 2027 elections approach, Ngilu is re-emerging from her political hiatus, preparing to vie for the position again. However, Kalonzo’s reported support for a different Wiper candidate could set the stage for a major fallout, with Ngilu potentially accusing him of reneging on their agreement.

Beyond Kitui, Kalonzo’s influence in Machakos and Makueni counties appears to be waning. Governors Mutula Kilonzo Jnr (Makueni) and Wavinya Ndeti (Machakos), both elected under the Wiper banner, seem to have distanced themselves from Kalonzo’s leadership.

Mutula has openly aligned with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration, signalling a departure from Wiper’s opposition stance. Wavinya has similarly avoided involvement in Wiper-led initiatives, even advising Kalonzo against staging protests in Machakos. In Kitui, Governor Peter Malombe has maintained a low profile and shown limited engagement with Wiper activities.

The absence of support from these influential leaders casts a shadow over Kalonzo’s strategy to consolidate his base in preparation for the 2027 elections. Political analysts suggest that Kalonzo’s challenges stem from a combination of internal party dynamics, shifting allegiances, and competing regional interests.
Additionally, the looming presence of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who retains influence in the region, and the growing political clout of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, add further complexity to Kalonzo’s efforts to solidify his position.

As Kalonzo prepares to navigate these turbulent waters, his leadership and ability to unite the region under the Wiper banner will be severely tested. The coming months will be critical in determining whether Kalonzo can reclaim his influence and reassert his role as a key political figure in the region or whether these challenges will erode his grip on the Eastern bloc.
The battle for Mount Kenya and Eastern votes promises to be intense, with alliances, betrayals, and shifting loyalties likely to define Kenya’s political chessboard in the lead-up to 2027. For Kalonzo Musyoka, the stakes have never been higher.
