Addressing the media at a press conference, Kalonzo warned that Ruto’s administration will eventually be held accountable for the growing challenges facing the nation, particularly the broken education system. He pointed to the struggles students in Grade 9 face and condemned the newly introduced university funding model, which he said disproportionately favours wealthy families
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has sharply criticized President William Ruto’s efforts to unite the country through his “bread and broad-based government” agenda. Kalonzo’s remarks come on the heels of Wiper Party’s official move to expel Daadab MP Farah Maalim the party for alleged gross misconduct.
During a National Executive Council meeting held recently at Wiper’s headquarters, Kalonzo, who chaired the session, announced the decision to de-register Maalim. He labelled Maalim’s actions as detrimental to the party and reaffirmed the Wiper Party’s commitment to purging itself of members who undermine its unity.
Kalonzo also questioned Ruto’s moral authority to claim that he would triumph over his opponents in the 2027 general elections, despite rising public discontent. “The President should not purport to unite a country that is already united. In fact, Kenyans are united in their resolve to send him home in 2027,” Kalonzo declared.
Addressing the media at a press conference, Kalonzo warned that Ruto’s administration will eventually be held accountable for the growing challenges facing the nation, particularly the broken education system. He pointed to the struggles students in Grade 9 face and condemned the newly introduced university funding model, which he said disproportionately favours wealthy families.
“The education system is in shambles, and parents are left wondering what happens to students after Grade 9. The government’s university funding model has excluded the poor, leaving many wondering what future lies ahead for their children,” Kalonzo remarked.
Kalonzo further criticized Ruto’s campaign promises to investigate state capture, accusing the current administration of institutionalizing the very issue they had vowed to fight. “A time will come when Ruto will be held accountable for the mess his administration has caused,” Kalonzo added.
Flanked by key Wiper allies, Kalonzo rallied Kenyans to remain hopeful and prepare for the 2027 polls, where, according to him, President Ruto and his allies will face a crushing defeat. He pointed to the rising cost of living, high unemployment rates, and human rights abuses such as abductions as growing public grievances.
“The country is united, not to build Ruto up, but to send him home. Kenyans are resolute that the suffering and abductions must end with this regime,” Kalonzo insisted.
In response, President Ruto dismissed Kalonzo’s remarks, predicting a resounding defeat for his critics in the upcoming election. During his ongoing tour of the Western region, the President defended his broad-based government as an effort to build consensus and expand his political base for re-election.
On Monday, Ruto also oversaw the disbursement of Sh150 million in bonuses to sugarcane farmers in Kakamega, a move aimed at boosting local agriculture. However, the event was marred by criticism from Mumias East MP Peter Salasya, who accused the President of sidelining local leaders and relying on flawed information.
Meanwhile, Kalonzo raised alarm over a purported plot by the Kenya Kwanza administration to impeach Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya. He alleged that local ward representatives had been promised Sh5 million to initiate the impeachment process, calling it a politically motivated witch hunt.
On the matter of Farah Maalim’s expulsion, Wiper Secretary-General Shakila Abdalla confirmed the decision, emphasizing that the party is gearing up for the 2027 elections. She urged supporters to prepare by ensuring their voter IDs are up to date and committed to holding internal elections and recruitment drives.
