An international counter-terrorism operation in East Africa led to the apprehension of 37 terror suspects and the confiscation of various weapons, including heavy arms. Among those arrested were 17 individuals detained in Kenya, identified as members of ISIS, Al-Shabaab, and other foreign terrorist networks.

Interpol revealed that arrests took place across eight East African countries between November and December 2024 during a joint initiative with AFRIPOL. The operation sought to identify suspects linked to terrorism, disrupt criminal networks, and enhance border security measures.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi highlighted Kenya’s growing success in combating terrorism, citing 27 foiled attacks and 11 convictions between 2022 and 2024, achieved through international cooperation.

During the operation, Interpol and AFRIPOL provided real-time intelligence and logistical support, training officers at critical border points to utilize Interpol Mobile Devices for instant access to global databases. These efforts resulted in over 88,000 security checks, uncovering additional suspects in crimes ranging from fraud to armed robbery.

Interpol and AFRIPOL leaders emphasized the importance of international collaboration, intelligence sharing, and strengthening regional partnerships to counter the persistent threat of terrorism in East Africa.
