Gachagua’s Presidency Bid: Ambition, Survival or Illusion?

By The Weekly Vision Political Desk

Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has sent his strongest signal yet that he intends to contest the presidency in the 2027 General Election, despite calls for opposition unity. His declaration has reignited political debate on whether his ambition is rooted in genuine conviction, survival instincts, or sheer political illusion.

In a statement on Wednesday, September 10, Gachagua clarified that the opposition consensus to support each other’s candidates “only applies to the by-elections”, adding that come 2027, DCP will field a presidential candidate alongside aspirants in all 290 constituencies, 47 counties, and 1,450 wards across the country. As founder and party leader, he remains the most likely DCP flagbearer, if the courts allow him to contest, following his impeachment as Deputy President in 2024.

During his recent tour of the United States, the former Mathira MP reaffirmed his intent to vie for the top seat. However, analysts believe Gachagua’s posturing is less about strength and more about survival. Political commentators have warned that had DCP insisted on fielding a candidate in the Mbeere North by-election, Justin Muturi’s Democratic Party would have bolted from the so-called united opposition, sparking internal conflict.

“The opposition remains fragile, stitched together more by convenience than conviction,” warned one political commentator, adding that Gachagua’s impeachment appeal, hanging like a sword over his head, is forcing him to play both for time and for power.

For President Ruto, the by-elections scheduled for 27th November are a test of his United Democratic Alliance’s dominance, especially after ODM leader Raila Odinga stepped aside in support of Kenya Kwanza. But for Gachagua, the contests are an opportunity to demonstrate resilience, reposition himself within the opposition, and remind his former boss that he is far from politically finished.

The coming months will therefore determine whether Gachagua is a serious contender for 2027, or merely a political outcast struggling to stay relevant in a hostile landscape.
