Former Kanduyi MP Alfred Khang’ati is backing Mr Mwambu’s bid to capture the Senate position in what looks like a major boost for the former Bumula constituency Member of Parliament. Mwambu will be contesting for the Senatorial seat in Bungoma County on the UDA party ticket.
Mr Khang’ati contested as governor of Bungoma County through the ODM party in the August polls. Khang’ati is an experienced politician in Bungoma and a long-time friend of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Speaking after holding a meeting with Mr Mwambu in Bungoma town on Tuesday, Khang’ati affirmed his support for the former MP in the by-election whose date is about to be announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Mr Mwambu also enjoys the support of President William Ruto and UDA MP’s in Bungoma County led by Webuye West MP Dan Wanyama. President Ruto and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula are expected to lock horns in the Senatorial race as Wetangula’s party Ford Kenya has already endorsed Mr Wafula Wakoli to contest for the Senate seat. Mr Wafula Wakoli is Moses Wetang’ula’s longtime aide.
“Mwambu is the best option to replace Speaker Moses Wetangula as the senator because he is an experienced legislator and he can articulate issues,” Khang’ati said. On his part, Mr Mwambu said that he is ready to battle with Ford Kenya’s aspirant and emerge the winner in the race, adding that he is equal to the task and able to represent the Bungoma people in the Senate.
Mr Khang’ati’s endorsement comes two days after the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ward coordinators endorsed him as the best bet to become the Bungoma Senator. “Today I am a happy man because I have received double endorsements from my supporters, something that has given me a psych to compete with my opponents,” Mwambu noted.
