Westlands Constituency Parliamentary candidate in the last general elections Nelson Havi may just be a heartbeat away from securing a plum job as Kenya’s Solicitor General.
Mr Havi contested the seat on the United Democratic Alliance and lost to Tim Wanyonyi of ODM who garnered 58,408 votes against Havi’s 19,550, he is a former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) boss. He is among the eight people shortlisted by the Public Service Commission (PSC) for the position. The holder of the office is the principal assistant to Attorney General.
Havi was initially believed to be eyeing the AG’s slot but that did not come to pass. Sources told The Weekly Vision that top Luhya community leaders have been lobbying for him through Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
That Havi and President Ruto are buddies is not a secret. The two were in the same camp during the stormy BBI legal battle where Mr Havi led a team of lawyers who opposed the BBI saying it was an initiative of Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga. Another Ruto ally eyeing the plum job is Mary Karen Kigen. She is a former Jubilee Party Deputy Executive Director; she fell out with Uhuru Kenyatta and joined William Ruto in the run-up to the last elections.
But even as the Luhya community hopes to get the Solicitor General’s position through Nelson Havi, sources divulged that President Ruto is also under pressure from the Abagusii community to be considered. The outgoing SG Kennedy Ogeto is from the Kisii region. Kisii leaders have been pushing to have one of their own retain the seat. The region’s political leaders have cried foul claiming that President Ruto had marginalized the region despite voting for him.
It is such pressure and a rumour of being marginalized that has led to the clamour that the SG’s position should be retained by one of their own. The name of Shadrack John Mose who lost the Kitutu Masaba Parliamentary seat to Clive Gisero of ODM has been featured prominently. He has also been shortlisted for the job.
