All is not well between two former political buddies from the Ukambani region. Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka seems to have fallen out with Makueni county governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. over what insiders claim is the difference in opinion over planned Azimio rallies. Mutula Jr. has since promised not to involve himself with any Azimio rallies and demonstrations until the Ukambani region gets development projects like the Nyanza region.
His statement has been interpreted to mean that he is blaming Kalonzo for the poor development of the region, something Kalonzo supporters have not taken kindly. They claim Mutula Jr. has been defying Kalonzo in many political aspects immediately after he was declared the winner in the gubernatorial race.
While blaming Klaonzo for his poor development records, Mutula Jr. was quoted saying “I will not go to the demonstrations until we get good roads, airports and other projects which Nyanza region got from former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government.” To further show how defiant Jr. has become, he went on to declare that he will work with the current government to ensure it delivers developments to his people, stating that fighting the current government will not help the Kamba community. Already Kalonzo Musyoka’s close allies are calling for the governor’s removal as the Wiper party vice chairman. A big political clash is looming between him and Kalonzo considering that Kalonzo has been on the front line participating in the Azimio rallies.
This is not however the first time Mutula Jr. is defying his party boss. Last year, he called upon Ukambani region leaders to ensure they work with the Kenya Kwanza government for the benefit of their people. Last year, Mutula shocked both friends and foes when he defended the decision by the Supreme Court to dismiss a petition by the Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya coalition challenging William Ruto’s victory saying the petition lacked merit, something he saw even before the case was lodged at the apex court. This again did not go down well with Kalonzo’s inner circle.
