The Cabinet Secretary for Roads, Transport, and Public works in President William Ruto’s government Mr Kipchumba Murkomenhas been called on to reign on and deal with rogue engineers working with Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA), especially Nairobi region. In particular, an insider who requested anonymity says the head of state should crack the whip against engineers based at the KeRRA Nairobi region offices based along Dunga road industrial area.
The accusations have been levelled against the Engineer in charge of Nairobi Kenneth Mbogori. “This is the most interesting office you can ever work in’’, a source said. Mr Mbogori is never seen in the office and when you see him, he comes in for deals, especially from contractors. To surprise you he comes here almost once in a month,” said a source who works in the Nairobi office but requested anonymity.
The source alleged Mr Mbogori is so relaxed that he does not care no matter what complaints are raised against him. “He does not care at all. Actually, to surprise you, we have roads that have been done hurriedly after complaints were braised by the public. For instance, in Karen, Ngara and even in Mathare. We suspect his connection with the Director-General has made him not to care,” said the source.
Reports have also emerged that there has been misuse of funds in the Nairobi office. “ We operate like we are in a jungle. Either you report to work or not that’s your problem. Our boss has shown us gthe way. Why can’t our CS do something because the reality is that we have problems in Nairobi,” said the source?
As things stand, the regional top officials linked to corruption are living under the fear they could be picked up at any time for interrogation. According to sources, top managers in Nairobi have registered firms using and operated by relatives and friends as proxies that win lucrative tenders and payments made promptly.
