Governor Fernandes Barasa of Kakamega Country has called for a speedy revival of the sugar industry in the lake region economic bloc. He was addressing a gathering during the opening of a 3-day annual Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) Summit in Migori County. This year’s theme is “Partnership In Sustainable Development: County responses to blue economy & climate change adaptation in the Lake Region”. The governor said the ailing sugar industry needed a lasting solution as it has been politicized for quite a long time hurting farmers and rendering many young people jobless.
Governor Barasa observed that once the industry is stabilized it will generate income for the farmers and government at large besides addressing the unemployment menace bedevilling the country. Day one of the summit saw the Governor lead his colleague and stakeholders in discussing the future of the sugar industry in the lake region.
“Revival of the sugar sector is vital to the economic empowerment of the region to cater for the large populace in terms of job creation and the feeding of the families. Among other interventions, the LREB members committed to advocating for proper policy and regulatory framework, and political goodwill.
In attendance were LREB chairperson Prof. Anyang Nyong’o, LREB chief executive officer (C.E.O) Victor Nyagaya, and governors from the LREB led by the host Dr Ochilo Ayacko.
