Details of a secret gentleman’s agreement between Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anynag’ Nyong’o and Kisumu Senator Prof. Tom Ojienda in the run-up to the last general elections have emerged following a big political fallout between the two leaders.
According to sources privy to the secret agreement, Prof. Anyang’ had reached out to Mr Ojienda for his support in his bid for a second term with a promise that when he retires in 2027, he will pass the mantle to Ojienda. Immediately after the elections, Ojienda who sources say had been promised a share of the county government got a raw deal after the governor failed to consider the names he had proposed for various positions in the county government.
Initially, Ojienda had shown interest in unseating Anyang’ but following consultations, he was under pressure to support Anyang’ to finish his term and in return will be supported in 2027. It has now emerged that Ojienda’s move to work with President William Ruto and to abandon the ODM party was caused by mistrust after indications were all over that Anyang’ was grooming Nyakach MP Aduma Owuor to succeed him.
It is being whispered that the governor is said to have confided in his close allies that he was more comfortable with Aduma than Ojienda and should Aduma opt out, he will support his loyal deputy of ten years Dr Owili. When word leaked out that the governor had backtracked on their agreement, Ojienda vowed to destroy him politically through the county assembly.
Last week, Ojienda led a group of Kisumu MCAs to a meeting with Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo and the agenda of the meeting according to the MCAs was development. Sources close to the governor however revealed that Ojienda is on a mission to buy out MCAs to frustrate him at the county assembly.
The Governor has also used his influence and reached out to the ODM top brass to discipline the MCAs. The MCAs have now been ousted from their respective committees. Those ousted from the committee slots are Gard Olima (South West Nyakach), Vincent Odhiambo (Central Nyakach), and Habil Nyasuna (Masogo/ Nyang’oma).
Others are Kelvin Oraro (Kolwa Central), Fredrock Odari (Chemelil Tamu), Oiko Pete (Kabonyo/Kanyagwal), Tom Onditi(Ombeyi), Tom Nyaoke (North Nyakach) Millicent Omuya (North Seme) Caroline Opar (nominated) and Regina Kizito (nominated).
