Unregistered churches in Bungoma County are under siege afert the police launched a crackdown to ascertain the number of churches per Sub-county. Speaking to the press in his office on Friday, Bungoma County police commander Francis Kooli said that the police have taken the initiative to ensure that all churches in Bungoma County comply with the law.
“We have taken up the matter to ensure that all churches in Bungoma have complied with the law, these Shakahola mass killings have raised a lot of concerns from different groups of people,” Kooli added. The police boss noted that currently in a search done by the police, they have been able to identify 310 churches in Bungoma South Sub-County, 460 in Bungoma Central, 390 in Webuye East and 424 in Kimilili.
“This is just a small area in Bungoma County, we haven’t done a crackdown in the entire Bungoma, we target to get even more churches, “he said. However, Kooli, noted that the sole purpose of carrying out the crackdown is to ascertain if the churches operating in Bungoma County are abiding by the law and if they are transacting legal business.
Kooli said that he has given those who haven’t registered their churches one month to ensure that they do so and surrender their certificates at the nearest police station. “I have asked all church leaders drawn from Bungoma that after they have followed all channels of registration they should hand over certificates to the nearest police station and display a photocopy on the church wall,” Kooli said. He added that the crackdown to establish rogue churches started two weeks ago.
