Politically speaking Mutula Jr. has been missing in action, skipping all Wiper party meetings including Azimio. It is being said that after he declared support for President Ruto over Raila Odinga, he has never met Kalonzo one on one. Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s move to conduct a town hall meeting dubbed thanksgiving prayers for all elected leaders on the party’s ticket is causing panic in his Ukambani region. Political analysts however say that Mr Kalonzo’s move is to consolidate his Ukambani backyard as he begins to focus on his second presidential bid in 2027. The planned meeting is said to be sending cold shivers down the spine of Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior who was Mr Kalonzo’s confidante in the past years until the two fell out over the 2022 election.
According to sources, Mutula Jr. has found himself at crossroads after he jumped ship and declared support for President William Ruto, a man Kalonzo has not recognized as the country’s president. It is worth noting that Mutula Jr. has since broken ranks with his party leader as rumours spread like a bushfire that he will defect from the Wiper Party to defend the Makueni gubernatorial seat on President William Ruto’s UDA party.
Politically speaking, Jr. has been missing in action, he has skipped all Wiper party meetings and even Azimio’s. It is being said that after he declared support for Ruto, he has never met Kalonzo one on one. The big question however is why Jr. decided to betray Kalonzo, a man who introduced him to politics after the demise of his father Mutula Kilonzo Sr. It is being whispered that the two fell out during the election of the Makueni County Assembly Speaker after they differed on a compromised candidate.
According to those who have been keenly following Ukambani politics, after Prof. Philip Kaloki and Polycarp Igathe lost the Nairobi gubernatorial seat to UDA’s Johnson Sakaja, Kaloki is said to have approached Kalonzo to give him a soft landing as the county Speaker as he prepares for 2027 elections. Kalonzo being known as the gentleman of Kenyan politics gave him the go-ahead and started lobbying for him. However, Mutula did not approve of Kaloki’s candidature and fronted a former speaker Douglas Mbilu. According to Mutula, allowing Kaloki as the county assembly speaker will give him an advantage and control of the assembly and by extension the electorate and run against him in 2027. Kalonzo on his part maintained that Kaloki was the party’s choice for the speaker. Mutula is said to have used millions of shillings to lobby MCAs to reject Kaloki. When a vote was taken, Mutula’s preferred candidate Mbilu garnered 26 votes against Kaloki’s 21 votes. Kalonzo did not take it kindly and vowed to teach Mutula a lasting political lesson.
Mutula who has been a close confidante of Kalonzo knows what it means when the party leader confines in his allies that he will teach you a lesson, It is against such fears that Mutula decided to part ways with Kalonzo and prepare to face his preferred candidate in 2027. There have been murmurs from some Wiper leaders over the choice of the venue which is Kalonzo’s expansive Yatta farm in Machakos. Kalonzo has however decided to make the event a national event by inviting ex-President Uhuru Kenyatta, Azimio chiefs Raila Odinga, Martha Karua and Eugene Wamalwa among others.
