It now appears that former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo could remain in the political cold for long after attempts to secure a state job in President William Ruto’s administration failed. According to sources well versed with the operations of President Ruto on state appointments. Mr Kabogo has been frozen out over his push and alleged incitement of Mount Kenya politicians regarding the “One man One vote One shilling drive.”
Sources add that Mr Kabogo has allegedly been holding secret meetings with some politicians from the Mount Kenya region reminding them that President Ruto had initially undertaken to include the “one man one vote shilling drive” in the 2023 finance bill.
It is against that background that a section of Mount Kenya leaders have been pushing the president to implement the initiative since he had campaigned based on ensuring equitable distribution of resources. It is also being whispered that Mr Kabogo had recently visited State House to see the president although the agenda of the meeting remains scanty. Sources at the state house divulged that he had gone to seek a state job of which the president never made an undertaking.
Mr Kabogo was hoping to get a position in Ruto’s cabinet but his name went missing as his nemesis Moses Kuria landed the lucrative Transport docket. He however never applied for the Chief Administrative Secretary position after realizing that his political detractors have advised the president not to include him in his government.
Ever since he missed all the appointments including State Corporations, Mr Kabogo is said to have taken a new stand, that of pushing President Ruto to implement the one man, one vote, one shilling drive. He has been telling Mount Kenya leaders that Ruto had promised he would adopt an economic model that would be used to allocate some funds to the county governments in the region.
“I went to Ruto and I told him that one man one shilling would go a long way for the region. He answered that the model would hurt many counties, but promised me that additional money would be allocated to the counties in his administration,” he said.
The economic strategy aimed to spell out how the Mt Kenya region would benefit from his government if he is elected president. Another bone of contention between Kabogo and Ruto is a claim that he has been sponsoring rebellion against Kiambu Governor Kimani wa Matangi. Sources claim that Kabogo has been financing MCAs and other stakeholders against the governor intending to impeach him.
Although Kabogo has vehemently denied the allegations, sources close to him say that he had vowed to ensure Governor wa Matangi is either impeached or does not win a second term. This has not however gone down well with the president and other Kenya Kwanza brigades.
