Currently a Lecturer at Moi University in Eldoret, he is recognised for his expertise in International Business, Maritime Management, Logistics, and broader management issues. A holder of a Doctorate in Business (Foreign Direct Investment), he is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the United Kingdom and a member of the Academy of International Business. His academic career has taken him across two continents, teaching at universities in both Kenya and the UK.
Before joining academia, Dr Odunga built a strong career in the maritime and logistics industries in Kenya and Britain, gaining valuable insights into the Blue Economy, trade, logistics, and investment. His scholarly contributions have been presented at international conferences, focusing on Foreign Direct Investment, Economic Growth, Export Performance, and the Economics of Tourism.
His leadership qualities became evident during his postgraduate studies at Birmingham City University and Wolverhampton University in the UK, where he was elected to represent international postgraduate students. He actively campaigned for the rights of foreign students, advocating for fairer tuition fees and improved welfare. These efforts reflected his enduring commitment to public service.
Dr Odunga’s academic journey has been supported by prestigious awards, including a PhD scholarship under the UK Commonwealth Scholarship Scheme. He has also successfully secured research funding from British universities, underscoring his ability to build strong institutional partnerships.
Beyond academia, he has invested heavily in education at the grassroots level. Inspired by his late parents, Mzee Gaetano Odunga, a headteacher, and Mama Emmah Odunga, a nurse, he continues their legacy of service by sponsoring underprivileged students in Busia. Working with friends in the UK, he has financed the education of dozens of pupils at secondary level. He is currently serving his second term as Chairman of the Board of Management at St Austin’s Kingandole High School.
His voluntary service is extensive. He has organised educational workshops for school leavers, promoted international scholarship opportunities, and supported charitable initiatives. While in the UK, he volunteered with the West Midlands Special Olympics and ran annual half-marathons to raise funds for children’s charities.
His contribution to the church and local community is equally noteworthy. As Chairman of the Development Committee of St Maximilian Kolbe Esigomere Sub-Parish, he is overseeing the construction of a modern KSh 27 million church complex in Butula.
At Moi University, Dr Odunga continues to shape academic programmes. He supervises undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students, manages the Maritime Management programme, and has played a leading role in developing new curricula in 2015 and 2024. He also acts as a bridge between academia and industry, building partnerships with foreign universities and the logistics sector.
Fluent in English, Kiswahili, and Luhya, Dr Odunga embodies resilience, global exposure, and a deep passion for education and community empowerment. At a time when Kenya seeks leaders to bridge academia, industry, and public policy, Dr Peter Shoko Odunga stands out as a scholar whose blend of professional expertise and grassroots engagement positions him for higher national service in the years ahead.
